Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he admitted that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
