Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
