Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest win of his career by coming back from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win marks Norrie's initial success over a current world No 1.

"Massive. Extremely important for me," stated Norrie, who joins as the latest British man in history to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to enjoy my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a triumph like this, it's the greatest success of my career, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and arguably the strongest player in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine finals in a row and 17 successive Masters 1000 wins, which marked the top run of results in the young champion's early professional path.

Alcaraz looked to be advancing smoothly to success in the beginning as he sailed through the first set. However, the British contender steadily fought his way into contention by delivering with greater precision and dragging the Spaniard into extended, physical rallies. His persistent shot tolerance and consistency gradually took its toll.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he struggled badly to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The rising talent appeared particularly struggling executing his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the sport for most of this year, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie offered his opponent so few mistakes, sustaining his consistency, physicality and penetration the entire contest while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to move inside the baseline and attack well.

Career Context

Following battling for a long time due to a major arm issue and challenges with his form, the tennis professional slipped as low as 91st globally this year.
