Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series
Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
