Scream Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Characters
It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a small cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the popular series.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
