The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
