The Trump movement's most telling and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the US president started showing everyone his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As disorienting as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.

The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and direct fact that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
