Authorities in Tasmania are striving to determine a magenta ooze that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with certain experts concerned it could be an algae outbreak.

Widespread Occurrence Along Beaches

The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a portion of a southern bay about 60 kilometers south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been documented on sections of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.

Specimens Taken for Examination

Samples have been collected and provided to the regulatory body for analysis. A representative stated that "algae outbreaks are a natural event in response to variations in nutrients, heat, rainfall or light".

"These blooms are occasionally called reddish tides because the blooms can change the water red," the representative added. "Not all algae outbreaks are harmful, with many species acting as a major source of energy for creatures in the oceanic food chain."

"The most common cause of reddish water in these seas is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."

"It's common to observe a proliferation of this algae after a proliferation of something else, or an event such as a fish reproduction," she noted.

A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, commented it looked like the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, pointing to similar cases elsewhere.

"Thus Tasmania needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the EPA need to respond to this. We need to analyse the examples we've taken and we need to notify the people here," she said.

The scientist stated she had worries for public safety after experiencing a numbness along her arms and face while being exposed with tainted seawater.
