UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
